New York Bet Of Mind
I’m big into principles in regards to betting
2007-04-17
I’m big into principles in regards to betting, as I’ve chronicled in previous blogs. Betting on teams that are on streaks (i.e. Suns), betting against teams that are on slumps (i.e. Celtics), and going with my gut instead of overanalyzing a pick (God bless you, Cornell!). Now, as I looked at my wager board for tonight, another principle jumped right out at me: fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. The team that has fooled me before: my Knicks. Now, in all honesty, I’d have to say that the Knicks are in double-digits in regards to how many times they’ve fooled me, but for wagering’s sake, this was probably the 2nd significant time where I easily could’ve been looking at fool’s gold in regards to a pick. The Knicks were at home, in the midst of a playoff chase, against the horrid Bucks, giving 4 points. Only 4 points. Coming off a complete thrashing on the road by the 76er’s, I thought the Knicks would be motivated and focused playing at the Garden. Why do I continue to have so much faith in a team that keeps breaking my heart and losing me money?
The game did not start off very good for the Knicks. Although they were leading or close throughout the first half, they kept turning the ball over and the Bucks turned those miscues into points. Every time it seemed the Knicks made an errant pass, Mo Williams was there to put a dagger in the Knicks’ hearts. Without fail, he would turn a potential Knick opportunity into a momentum changing basket for the Bucks. Despite Marbury’s 3-point prayer as the first half buzzer sounded, the Knicks were staring a 4 point deficit in the face, and I had to count on the Knicks to go + 8 for the 2nd half. My hopes, financially and emotionally, were going up in smoke. Again.
Luckily for me as a fan, but unluckily for me as a gambler, the Knicks stayed close throughout the majority of the 2nd half, but could not get overtake the Bucks. The Eddy Curry program was certainly not in affect because despite him being 4 of 4 from the field, the Knicks refused to feed the big man in the post and settled for perimeter jump shots. While Richardson hit a couple of them, Crawford and Marbury were off target all night, and New York was unable to take advantage of Milwaukee’s lackluster play. At no point during the 2nd half did the Knicks take a 4 point lead, and it looked bleak for my wager. As a fan, however, my heart remained in the game, and I was rewarded for my persistence by having the Knicks win the game with 0.8 seconds left on the clock on a controversial foul call on Andrew Bogut that was determined after the game had apparently ended. Fry hit his 2 freebies, the Bucks couldn’t get the ball into Bogut, and the Knicks won 95-93. No cover, but at least my team won. The Knicks screwed my wallet again, but at least they kept my heart intact. However, I hopefully can learn my lesson about getting fooled. Hopefully.
Till tomorrow, may all your bets be winners.
